The music industry is a pretty fast place and sometimes it is hard to keep up with what’s new. If you take a chance to slow down and think, you begin to realise that singers you loved haven’t been around for a while now. It’s not like they did anything wrong. Just one day, they vanished from the face of the earth, or at least the charts. Today I am going to a little look back on some of the singers I quite liked, who are nowhere to be seen. I am also going to go on a little research trip to see if I can uncover where these stars got to.
4 – RAGHAV
I couldn’t even really get a good quality video for this song, suggesting that Raghav didn’t do as well as I remember. I don’t know much about the guy other than him entering the charts with this song. It seems a little dated, looking back today, but you can see why I liked it. He’s got a good voice that has a Bollywood feel to it, that keeps it original. That song in the link got to number 11 in the charts in the UK. Maybe you guys are more familiar with the song he brought out a month later, ‘Angel Eyes’.
Where is he now?
According to Wikipedia, he is still in the singing game, but he has gone back to his roots and sings in India. His last song ‘Ishq Shava’ was featured in Bollywood movie, ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. He however, has recently signed up to a new record label in New York, Ultra Records, so he may be making a mainstream comeback very soon.
3 – ROB THOMAS
I still love this song. This guy’s vocals are so amazing and he hits the right balance between his rocky origins in his old band, Matchbox Twenty (a personal favourite of my girlfriend), and the pop style that was so popular (no pun intended), around the year that this song came out. It is the kind of song that I can put on repeat and just chill to in my room. I am kind of pleased I started this article, because I get to relive this tune.
Where is he now?
Seeing as he has had a pretty awesome career, Rob Thomas has pretty much semi-retired. He has enough money to live comfortably and focuses on his marriage with Marisol Maldonado. The two of them spend a lot of time working with charities, starting a non-profit business that helps abused animals and people who cannot afford medical care. He is also a same-sex marriage supporter and has written a few articles defending gay rights. And on top of that, he is always willing to tour with the old band every now and again. He is playing in Southampton, a city away from where I am now, and I am gutted that I can’t go.
2 – JAMELIA
Jamelia was the female artist that all other female artists aspired to be like when I was growing up ‘Superstar’ was one of the songs going around, when I first properly started listening to music and was a favourite at the school discos (god, I sound lame). She brought out albums going all the way back to 2006 and then she stopped, after a disappointing single ‘Beware of the Dog’. I have always wondered where she went.
Where is she now?
She modelled for a while, with Naomi Campbell. She also does a lot of charity work and features on several gameshows, such as ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’. She recently accepted a role as a judge on ‘the Voice Of Ireland’. Other than that, she has recently tried her hand at acting, such as her brief cameo in the second season of ‘Death In Paradise’. She did promise an exciting comeback album, inspired by the arrival of Lady Gaga, but there isn’t much new on it since. She is basically the music equivalent of that one friend we all have who ‘is working on a really good novel… honest!’
1 – ASHANTI
Who doesn’t love Ashanti? There is something about her voice that I really love. She is a good representation of the slow RnB that went with that era, yet her voice is unique enough to stand apart from the rest of the competition in that unit. Her voice is so soothing; you just end up relaxing into the music. The vocals just blend so well into the music, the song really feels holistic. It works so well that she doesn’t even need to rhyme her words, yet for some reason the lyrics are really good. Yet one day she upped and left and we didn’t see her for a long while.
Where is she now?
The easy answer is acting. She has been seen in several movies like the Muppets: Wizard of Oz and John Tucker Must Die. She has also done cameos for ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’, basically the only two good series of the 90s. However, that isn’t really a satisfactory answer here. The last time we saw her was way back in 2007 with Resident Evil: Extinction. So where has she been?
In all honesty, I cannot tell you, but what I can confirm is that 2013 may just be the comeback year for her. She will be starring in an upcoming series, ‘Army Wives’ and is working on a new album. It should be coming out this year and will be called ‘Braveheart’. We already have one of the songs ‘Never Too Far’, which was used in the film ‘Dream House’, starring Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz. It’s not the best track, but Ashanti promises that it isn’t even a lead single in the album: the movie just picked it up and thought it suited the style of the film. I shall leave you with the song in question. Enjoy.
